Red Lion and the surrounding Windsor Township countryside sit where York County's central limestone gives way to the harder, fractured metamorphic rock — schist and the northern edge of the Peach Bottom slate belt — that runs southeast toward the Susquehanna. Fractured bedrock creates direct pathways for soil gas, and Pennsylvania DEP records for the southern York County townships show some of the highest radon exceedance rates in the county. We regularly see Red Lion basements in the 10–40 pCi/L range, and a few older farmhouses on the ridges toward Felton and Brogue well above that.
Red Lion borough itself is mostly 1900s–1940s brick homes on stone or block foundations with low basement ceilings, plus the cigar-factory-era doubles along Main Street. Windsor Township and the York Township side toward Dallastown are newer — 1970s ranches, 1990s–2000s colonials in developments off Cape Horn Road and Windsor Road, many with passive rough-ins. Because the soil here is tighter than in East York, we more often need a higher-suction fan or a second suction point to reach the far corners of a slab, and we always confirm pressure-field extension before closing up. Crawl space additions are common on the older farm properties and get a sub-membrane system tied into the main fan.
