East York — the Springettsbury and York Township neighborhoods along East Market Street, Haines Road, Mount Zion Road and Whiteford Road — sits squarely on York County's limestone belt, and it is where we install more radon systems than anywhere else in the county. The ground here is porous carbonate bedrock with karst features, which lets soil gas move freely and means basements in Haines Acres, Yorkshire, Fayfield and the developments off Route 24 routinely test between 6 and 20 pCi/L. The same porosity is good news for mitigation: a single suction point and a mid-range fan usually depressurizes the entire slab.
Much of East York's housing dates from the 1950s through the 1980s — ranches and split-levels on block foundations with a sump pit in the corner of the basement. We often use the sump as the suction point under a sealed lid, which avoids coring a finished floor, and seal the top course of block where the wall cores are open. Newer construction toward Windsor Township and the Eastern York school district edge is mostly poured foundations that take a straightforward exterior system, and several of the newer subdivisions off Springwood Road already have passive radon rough-ins that we can activate by adding a fan for a fraction of a full install.
